Using the Measurement Tool

Overview 

The Measurement Tool is built into the iGUIDE 3D tour and allows you to estimate vertical and horizontal distances directly within the published experience. Whether you need to confirm a wall length, check room dimensions, or measure a fixture, the tool offers three different modes to suit a range of measuring needs.

It is important to note that all measurements produced by the tool are estimates and carry a degree of discrepancy. They should not be relied upon as 100% accurate and are intended as a guide rather than a substitute for verified, on-site measurements.

Understanding the Measurement Tool 

The Measurement Tool is located within the 3D tour of an iGUIDE. It helps you measure vertical and horizontal spaces within the tour and provides measurement estimates while exploring the property in the 3D view.

Important to keep in mind:

  1. The tool delivers approximate measurements based on captured scan data
  2. Results carry a margin of discrepancy and should not be treated as 100% accurate
  3. For critical decisions, always verify dimensions with a physical, on-site measurement

Using Measurement Mode 1 

Measurement Mode 1 is the default mode when the Measurement Tool is opened. It is used to make horizontal measurements directly on the floor plan within the 3D tour.

To use Measurement Mode 1:

  1. Open the 3D tour you wish to measure within
  2. Click the hamburger menu in the top right hand corner
  3. Turn measure "on" 
  4. Right click and drag a line on the floor plan over the area you want to measure
  5. Release the cursor to generate the measurement along the drawn line

Using Measurement Mode 2

Measurement Mode 2 helps you measure vertical and horizontal spaces using the 3D visuals instead of the floor plan.

To use Measurement Mode 2:

  1. Open the 3D tour you wish to measure within
  2. Click the hamburger menu in the top right hand corner
  3. Turn measure "on"
  4. Click the Measurement Tool icon along the bottom of the page to select Mode 2
  5. Right click and drag a line on the floor plan to set the measurement reference
  6. Double-click on the first point you want to measure from
  7. Double-click on the second point you want to measure to
  8. A measurement will appear between the two selected points

Using Measurement Mode 3

Measurement Mode 3 triangulates a measurement using multiple viewpoints within the 3D tour to deliver greater accuracy, making it useful when more reliable estimates are needed. While Mode 3 typically produces tighter results than the other modes, the output remains an estimate and is still subject to small discrepancies.

To use Measurement Mode 3:

  1. Open the 3D tour you wish to measure within
  2. Click the hamburger menu in the top right hand corner
  3. Turn measure "on"
  4. Click the Measurement Tool icon at the bottom of the page to select Mode 3
  5. Double-click on the first point and then the second point you wish to measure from (a line will appear with "???" attached to it)
  6. Move to another viewpoint in the 3D tour where both points are visible
  7. From the new viewpoint, double-click on the same first and second points again
  8. The line will update with the calculated measurement, and you can move between viewpoints to confirm

Considerations when Using Measurement Modes

Because measurements are estimates derived from scan data, accuracy depends heavily on how the property was captured. To minimize discrepancies and improve reliability, keep the following in mind:

  1. Lens positioning - always aim the lens toward the walls or objects you expect to measure, as direction directly affects accuracy
  2. Scan placement - position scans at equal distances from the objects being measured to reduce uncertainty
  3. Triangle method for Measurement Mode 3 - capture at least two scans that form a "triangle" with the measured object, ideally aligned along the same line
  4. Extra scans - take more scans than may be needed for drafting, since additional data improves measurement support, especially for walls
  5. Room size - break larger rooms into smaller sections with more scan points to improve measurement reliability
  6. Verification - treat all results as estimates and confirm with physical measurements where exact precision is required

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How come I can't see the measurement tool at all on I 3D tour?
    • The iGUIDE may have the advanced option "Hide on-screen measure feature" turned on. If it is you can go to the Edit View page of the iGUIDE on the portal to turn it off.  
  • Why do my measurements seem slightly off?
    • All measurement modes produce estimated values rather than exact figures, so a small degree of discrepancy is expected. Capture quality, scan placement, and the chosen measurement mode all influence accuracy. For critical decisions, always verify with an on-site measurement.
