How to Use Survey

Overview

Survey is the interface inside the PLANIX app that gives Operators full control over their iGUIDE camera. It's used to capture and edit panos, manage lidar data, adjust camera settings, and align scans during a shoot. Both the PLANIX R1 and PLANIX Pro have their own Survey layouts.

As you capture, Survey also gives you visual feedback on the floor plan preview, showing the order your scans were taken, which direction you're looking, and what viewers will see first in the 3D tour. These tools build on Real-Time Floor Plan Preview and Enhanced Tags to help you stay oriented, check coverage, and reduce rework.

This guide breaks down the Survey interface for both camera systems, explains the floor plan preview tools, and walks through the Hamburger Menu, helping Operators navigate quickly between projects, floors, scans, tags, and settings while capturing accurate, well-organized iGUIDE projects in the field.

PLANIX R1 Survey Layout

  1. Capture Button (A) — Press to capture a 360° panoramic image
  2. Two-Shot Mode (B) — Capture in two halves when no hiding place is available; stand behind the power button for the first shot, then move to the front for the second
  3. Real-Time Tagging (C) — Tap the Tag icon, set a title and type, place the tag in the image, adjust its distance, and save
  4. Align Button (D) — Manually align panoramic images that did not auto-align
  5. Capture Settings (E)
    • HDR — Choose High (-5EV/+2EV, default), Medium (-3EV/+3EV), or Low (-1EV/+2EV); higher values slow capture speed
    • Noise Reduction — Choose High, Medium, or Low (default); enabling slows capture speed
    • Stitching — Static (precise measurements) or Dynamic (best visual quality)
  6. View Options (F) — Recommended View, Image-Only View, or Laser Data-Only View
  7. Navigation Between Scans (G) — Move between captured scans for review
  8. Hide Scan Button (H) — Hide scans from the public tour while keeping their data for drafting

Floor Plan Preview Tools

As you capture, the floor plan preview shows where each scan was taken and how it relates to the 360° image. These tools help you stay oriented, check coverage, and review your work without leaving Survey.

  1. Cone of Perception (A) — The blue cone on the active scan shows the direction you're currently viewing in the 360° preview. As you pan the image, the cone turns with it, making it easy to match what you see in the image to its location on the floor plan and choose your next scan position.
  2. Numbered Scan Locations (B) — Each scan is numbered in the order it was captured, and the number appears directly on the scan position. Following the numbers shows the path you took through the property, which helps you spot missed rooms, see where each scan fits in your walkthrough, and find the right spot when re-shooting. Numbers hide automatically when you zoom out.
  3. Initial Angle Indicator (C) — The small curved line just outside each scan circle shows the scan's default view, the first thing viewers will see when they open that scan in the 3D tour. When the cone of perception lines up with the indicator, the 360° preview shows exactly what a viewer will see first.
  4. Single Tap Scan Selection — Tap any scan on the floor plan to make it the active scan. When a scan is selected, the cone of perception automatically aligns with its initial angle indicator so you can immediately see that scan's default view.
  5. Quick Tag View — Tap a tag on the floor plan, then tap the binoculars icon to jump the 360° image straight to that tag. This makes it quick to review or fix tags without searching the image manually.
  6. Auto Centering — Tapping a scan or tag near the edge of the screen automatically centers it on the floor plan. Pinch, zoom, and drag still work as usual.

Hamburger Menu

  1. Survey — The main screen for capturing and reviewing scans and lidar data 
  2. Project — Locate, switch, rename, delete, and create projects. You can also create a project from the + button on the PLANIX app's main projects screen.

  3. Floor — Manage the floors in your current project (move, rename, delete, or add). When capturing a floor of vertical scans, select Vertical Scans to turn off capture guidance features that don't apply to vertical scans, such as Real-Time Floor Plan Preview, alignment alerts, and live lidar. This applies to the entire floor and is optional but recommended.

  4. Scan — View, rename, delete, or hide scans for the active project 
  5. Tag — View, edit, and delete tags created with real-time tagging 
  6. Settings — Access all Survey settings

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I access Survey without being connected to a camera? 
A: No, you will need to be connected to a camera through the PLANIX App in order to connect to Survey. 

Q: Can I create a project without being connected to a camera?
A: For PLANIX Pro, the + button on the main projects screen is only available while a camera is connected. For PLANIX R1, the button becomes available once you've connected a camera and remains available even when the camera is disconnected.

Q: Why can't I see the scan numbers on the floor plan?
A: Scan numbers hide automatically when you zoom out. Zoom in on the floor plan to see them again.

Q: Should I use the Vertical Scans floor setting?
A: It's recommended whenever you capture a floor of vertical scans. It turns off features like Real-Time Floor Plan Preview, alignment alerts, and live lidar for that floor, since they don't apply to vertical scans.
